What is Herbal Medicine? PDF Print E-mail
Herbal Medicine is the use of plants for medicinal purposes. It is the oldest form of medicine. Yet, millions of people throughout the world are still using herbal medicines today as their main form of medicine to prevent and treat illness. Herbal medicines are commonly prescribed in the form of teas, liquid extracts, and tablets.

Herbal Versus Pharmaceutical Medicines?

A pharmaceutical medicine usually contains only one substance that is highly purified. New drugs are very expensive to develop because they do not naturally occur and therefore must undergo strict testing to ensure their safety. This, however, also allows a pharmaceutical medicine to be patented which can provide a lucrative return.

Plants, on the other hand, are chemically complex and contain thousands of different plant chemicals and nutrients which act in synergy, these include fats, carbohydrates, proteins, enzymes, vitamins and minerals, tannins, isoflavones, saponins, flavonoids, glycosides, coumarins, bitters, phyto-oestrogens, etc. A plant can therefore have multiple pharmacological actions and treat a number of illnesses at the same time. Because plants naturally occur they cannot be patented, no one can claim ownership.

Are Herbal Medicines safe?

Herbal medicines which have been manufactured according to the Australian Government's Code of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), and used correctly, are safe. Problems with safety usually only occurs when people self-prescribe and end up taking the wrong dose or an inappropriate herb for their condition. Also, when people mix prescribed medications with herbal medicines without professional advice, and when people buy herbs without GMP assurance resulting in a product which may be inadvertently contaminated with heavy metals, pesticide residues, or other potentially toxic plants.
