What can remedial massage do for me? |

Why do people come for remedial massage? They come to relax, or to gain relief from pain. Some just want to treat themselves to something nice because massage simply feels good. It increases blood circulation and helps manage chronic pain and tension as experienced with arthritis, anxiety, and chronic fatigue syndrome. Some use massage to deal with muscular discomfort associated with pregnancy or to get a break from the day to day rush. Others find it a safe place to tell about their troubles and 'get things off their chest'.
"Massage is both a treatment for easing pain and discomfort caused by injuries, strains and illness, as well as a relaxing, pampering, feel-good experience for anyone who would enjoy a greater sense of vitality and well-being. Anyone at any age can enjoy the benefits of massage", says Janne Thomsen.
What happens during a remedial massage treatment? You lie on the massage table in your underwear and are covered with towels, only the section of your body worked on is uncovered. A standard massage will include massage to the back, shoulders and neck. It may also include, if the client wants it, massage to the feet, legs, and arms. Problem areas will receive extra attention.
A standard treatment lasts one hour. Half hour appointments are also available, as these are sometimes more suitable for children or spot-work for problem areas. The techniques used are simple and non-intrusive including stroking and kneading of the muscles to increase circulation and release muscular tension.
Research shows massage works!Massage has been found to have a positive effect on anorexia nervosa, anxiety, arthritis, asthma, ADD, autism, poor circulation, bulimia, cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome, cystic fibrosis, depression, dermatitis, diabetes, fibro myalgia, headache, hypertension, job stress, rheumatoid arthritis, back pain, multiple sclerosis, post-traumatic stress disorder, pre-menstrual syndrome, sleeplessness, and cigarette craving.
The research findings have in common that regular massage reduces anxiety, improves mood and quality of life, lowers stress hormone levels, increases serotonergic activity, and improves immune function by increasing natural killer cell numbers, it promotes relaxation and alleviates the perception of pain.
How often should you have a massage? This depends on your individual situation. If you are in pain, physically or emotionally, you will probably need a few massage treatments close together to loosen you up and to get rid of the pain. Then you may make it a regular treatment every three to six weeks. People who are under a great deal of stress tend to enjoy a massage every week.
Do I need a referral from my Doctor? You do not need a doctors referral to see a massage therapist, but it is advised that you carefully choose your massage therapist. Janne Thomsen has 19 years experience and is registered with the Australian Traditional Medicine Society (ATMS) adhering her to a strict code of ethics and continuing education.
Can I claim massage on my health fund?Yes - if you have ancillary cover with a health fund which provides rebates for remedial massage. More than thirty Australian private health funds now recognise the health benefits of remedial massage.
